September 21 was a terrible and tragic day in Kenya. Innocence lost at the hands of extremists. Kenyan friends indicate order has been restored. I hope our Special Forces continue to chase down the terrorists in the Africa and wherever else they may be found.
I made my first trip to Kenya in August. My partner, Col. Dennis Behrens, has been going to Kenya since the late 1960’s and has been on 39 safaris with Bateleur Safaris. I joined one of our groups this time and enjoyed an exceptional trip. My four days of bird shooting at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro were incredible. We shot yellow neck spur fowl, crested francolin, sand grouse and helmeted guinea fowl. Without question, one of the finest bird hunts I have ever been on.
The Maasai Mara Game Reserve was my next stop. To witness the wildebeest and zebra migration has to be seen to believe. I heard lions and hyenas every night, saw huge herds of buffalo and the multitude of plains game species that inhabitants the Serengeti/Maasai Mara ecosystem is truly amazing. I doubt there is a finer area to enjoy the splendors of African wildlife than the Mara.
Mike Cheffings and the Bateleur staff provided top shelf service and East African traditional tented camps were the excellent.
