Argentina

September 5, 2014

Myself and friends from south Texas have recently returned from Argentina.  Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, the group checked into the Emperador Hotel, went on a private guided tour and finished the day with a dinner and tango show.  The following morning, traveled to Estancia Acelain in the Pampas region to hunt ducks and perdiz.  The tour of the enormous castle at Acelain and learning its history was a huge bonus.  The duck hunting was tremendous with twelve different species taken.  My first afternoon of perdiz hunting produced 30 flushes in two hours and 20 birds taken between two of us. The following morning I decided to hunt perdiz again and personally shot 15 perdiz in under two hours.  My guide and handler, Elias, and his little two year old setter, Kela, were fantastic.   Kela is the best bird dog I have ever seen in Argentina.  She pointed birds with perfection and retrieved all to hand.  Finest perdiz hunt I have ever experienced.  We returned to Buenos Aires, enjoyed a delicious meal at Piegari and an overnight at the fine Sofitel Hotel.

Next stop was Estancia El Colibri in Cordoba.  Colibri is one of the finest lodges in all Argentina – very elegant and comfortable.  We enjoyed fast paced, high volume dove shooting that Cordoba is famously known for in the shooting world.  After two days of doves, we transferred to Montaraz Lodge for decoyed pigeons.  Montaraz Lodge was built in 1611 by the Jesuits.  It is a wonderful lodge with an abundance of character.  The decoyed pigeon shooting is a favorite of mine and the hunt exceeded my expectations. Combining dove and pigeons makes for a great Cordoba bird shoot.  The Frontera staff at Colibri and Montaraz provided gourmet meals, fine wine and first class service.  Among our group of 16 several were non-shooters. Private guided tours of historical sights and shopping trips were arranged for my friends that chose not to shoot doves and pigeons.

I enjoyed an incredible trip with great company.  My outfitters and partners in Argentina excelled once again.

Gordie’s Book

“There are some things I knew about Gordie White before I read his book…and one important thing I did not know. I knew that he was not only an experienced hunter, but a passionate, with a genuine love for wild places and wild creatures. I knew that he’d been brought up as a hunter, and that this is, essentially, his life as well as his hobby, both his avocation and vocation. It’s my chronological misfortune to consider him young, but he’s filled his years with a tremendous amount of experience, from Canada to Africa and back again, with multiple stops in between. I knew these things because we’ve shared African campfires together…and I knew one thing more: Gordie White is one of the good guys, honest, self-deprecating, not given to the shameless self-promotion that, in this era of mass communication without accountability, turns inexperienced ‘wanna-be’s’ into self-proclaimed gurus. But there was one important thing that I did not know about Gordie White: The man can write! Although I’m sure there are more, there are two things that make a book like this worthy of reading. First, the writer must have a genuine story to tell. Second, he must be able to tell it. Gordie White passes both tests, and has given us a great story, worth telling and worth reading.”
