bobwhite hunting in Georgia

April 1, 2015 –
Whenever I visit a great destination or lodge, I like to inform my fellow hunters about it. Well I visited a great one!

I have recently returned from a fantastic trip to South Georgia – a classic southern quail hunt on an intensely managed plantation. My daughter, Finley, and I joined Brian Huntley; his wife, Missy; and son, Hunter to Pine Hill Plantation in Donalsonville, GA. Pine Hill operates on 6000 acres of beautiful long leaf pine and wire grass forest. All hunting was conducted from mule drawn wagon and horseback. The hunt truly reflected the “Golden Days” of southern quail hunting. Following bird dogs on horseback through the pines is an amazing experience. We enjoyed two wonderful days of hunting; the bird dogs found many coveys (8-25 birds per covey – best estimate) and the shooting was fast and intense. Our dog handler, hunt master and wagon driver were a very professional, highly experienced and a pleasure to share company with. I was impressed by the string of pointers and setters on the wagon. Our Labrador retriever, Flint, did a great job finding birds buried in the wire grass.

Having been guiding and hunting bobwhite quail in Texas for the past 15 years, I can certainly attest to the challenge of shooting these great game birds in the pine forest!

Each group is provided with their private house/manor including staff and chef. The houses are tastefully furnished and very comfortable. Our chef prepared delicious meals. Pine Hill’s owners, Doug and Jackie Coe, along with their staff provided exceptional service in all aspects of the trip.

This is certainly a great trip that receives high marks and is a superb destination for couples, families, corporate groups and hard-core bird hunters. Finley also had a big time!!

If there is any interest on this first class vintage bird hunt – please give me a call. My plan is to return in March 2016 – I invite you to join me on my next trip to South GA. See the PDF highlighting Pine Hill and a photo of our group.

Gordie’s Book

“There are some things I knew about Gordie White before I read his book…and one important thing I did not know. I knew that he was not only an experienced hunter, but a passionate, with a genuine love for wild places and wild creatures. I knew that he’d been brought up as a hunter, and that this is, essentially, his life as well as his hobby, both his avocation and vocation. It’s my chronological misfortune to consider him young, but he’s filled his years with a tremendous amount of experience, from Canada to Africa and back again, with multiple stops in between. I knew these things because we’ve shared African campfires together…and I knew one thing more: Gordie White is one of the good guys, honest, self-deprecating, not given to the shameless self-promotion that, in this era of mass communication without accountability, turns inexperienced ‘wanna-be’s’ into self-proclaimed gurus. But there was one important thing that I did not know about Gordie White: The man can write! Although I’m sure there are more, there are two things that make a book like this worthy of reading. First, the writer must have a genuine story to tell. Second, he must be able to tell it. Gordie White passes both tests, and has given us a great story, worth telling and worth reading.”
