It was another exceptional season for our brown bear outfitter and clients. There is no shortage of big bears on the Alaskan Peninsula!
Warm weather arrived early, and the bears were out of their dens ahead of schedule and on the move. The spring of 2014 was similar, but the conditions were more favorable this season.
Brown bear outfitter, Jeremy Davis, and his hard-working staff guided 20 hunters to 19 bears. Remarkable success. Twelve of the 19 bears squared 10 feet or bigger, including one monster that measured an incredible 10’9”!
Dr. Jim Trimm of Alabama texted me his good news from the first place he had cell service, “10’3” on Day 3!” Jim told me he’d been happy with a 9’ bear, but was rewarded with a much bigger boar. My buddy, Troy Calaway, hunted a neighboring unit; he saw bears every day and took a 10’2” brute on Day 10. Jeremy Davis told me, “It was our best season ever and we’ve never seen so many bears.”
Hunting the big bears on the Alaskan Peninsula is one of the finest hunts anywhere in the world. I can’t say enough about Jeremy and his guides.
Will the bear hunts be better in the spring of 2018? Maybe, but the 2016 season was phenomenal.
Recently, I spent seven days in Paraguay hunting pigeons with a group of Texas friends. Our May 2015 hunt was superb so we immediately rebooked. This spring, Paraguay’s Chaco region received later-than-normal rains, which delayed the peanut harvest. This ultimately, made the pigeon concentrations more difficult to locate. Even so, we enjoyed some super shooting on most days and slower action on others – that’s hunting. We rebooked for 2017.
Since April, our friends have reported great trips to Argentina for ducks, doves, pigeons, and perdiz. Our African safari season recently started with hunters searching for buffalo, leopards, and a plains game inZimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, and South Africa.
Not all our trips involve guns. Our partners in South America, Africa, and Europe continue to provide first-class tours for our friends and clients. Friends from Colorado just finished exploring Peru and Ecuador. My latest email from the group states, “Galapagos was fantastic. The whole trip has been wonderful!! Thank you very much.”
In the next two months, friends will travel to Africa and Argentina. One family will return to Kenya for the third time – they can’t get enough of that spectacular country. In late July, I travel with Texas friends toAustralia for a buffalo hunt. A full report will follow after that adventure.
