Field Journal

Geyser, Montana
29 October 2017
5:50 a.m. Yesterday was likely the best prairie grouse hunt I’ve ever had. Gary Morrison and I hunted with John Kowalski….The prairie was wide and far, even in short grass. Beautiful. After a short hike, John’s tri-colored setter started to point sharptails….

October is the perfect month to hunt the South Dakota and Montana prairies for pheasants, sharptail grouse, and Hungarian partridge – the air is crisp, the snow has yet to fall. Conditions are perfect for man and dog alike. And December in Nebraska is prime-time for greenhead mallards and Canada geese. The colder, the better along the North Platte River.

Below are photos from this past season’s prairie hunts with friends. My outfitters, again, proved to be great partners by providing awesome hunts, excellent, lodging, and chef-prepared meals. Their guides, arguably, are the best in the business.

My good friends – Greg Hall, Dennis Branton, and Rob Snider – traveled to Cheyenne Ridge Lodge in South Dakota to film an episode for their Old School Outdoors show. (www.oldschooloutdoorstv.com).  Below is a short clip of their pheasant hunt.  Check it out.  Rob is a gifted videographer.  The footage is outstanding.

Their show’s title sponsor is Duxbak (www.duxbak.com), a company that’s produced classic, high-quality waterfowl and outdoor gear since 1904.  Have a look.  Amazing apparel.

If you or your friends are interested in a first-class prairie hunt (or any other hunt), call me for information.

Good Hunting,
Gordie

Gordie’s Book

“There are some things I knew about Gordie White before I read his book…and one important thing I did not know. I knew that he was not only an experienced hunter, but a passionate, with a genuine love for wild places and wild creatures. I knew that he’d been brought up as a hunter, and that this is, essentially, his life as well as his hobby, both his avocation and vocation. It’s my chronological misfortune to consider him young, but he’s filled his years with a tremendous amount of experience, from Canada to Africa and back again, with multiple stops in between. I knew these things because we’ve shared African campfires together…and I knew one thing more: Gordie White is one of the good guys, honest, self-deprecating, not given to the shameless self-promotion that, in this era of mass communication without accountability, turns inexperienced ‘wanna-be’s’ into self-proclaimed gurus. But there was one important thing that I did not know about Gordie White: The man can write! Although I’m sure there are more, there are two things that make a book like this worthy of reading. First, the writer must have a genuine story to tell. Second, he must be able to tell it. Gordie White passes both tests, and has given us a great story, worth telling and worth reading.”
